14/12/2018

The Christmas holidays are just around the corner and there are lots of things going on in Hull’s museums and galleries during the festive period.

Hull is home to the Ferens Art Gallery, a finalist in this year’s prestigious Museum of the Year award, the Martime Musuem, which explores the city’s rich maritime history and many more fantastic museums and galleries.

Councillor Marjorie Brabazon, chair of Hull Culture and Leisure, said: “Christmas is always a fantastic time of the year. It’s also often an opportunity to spend more time with family and friends.

“Hull has a fantastic range of museums and galleries, all of which have lots of fun and interesting exhibitions going on this Christmas and into the new year.”

An exhibition by Ian McKeever, who is regarded as one of the most significant British artists of his generation, is currently on display at Ferens Art Gallery.

The collection of work by the Withernsea-born artist, which is influenced by his experience growing up on the east coast, is on display until 13 January.

The art gallery is also home to world-class pieces of art as part of its permanent collection, which includes work by artists such as Pietro Lorenzetti, David Hockney, Leon Kossoff and Richard Parkes Bonington.

Also on display at Ferens over the Christmas holidays is the Junior Open Exhibition 2018. The exhibition features more than 300 pieces of work by children aged 15 and under. It’s on display until 20 January.

From 11am until 3pm, every Saturday before Christmas, there are craft activities at the Streetlife Museum.

On Saturday 15 December there’s the chance to design your own gift boxes, wrapping paper and gift tags. Then on Saturday 22 December you can learn how to create your own Art Deco stained glass Christmas cards and tree decorations.

Hull is home to many other fantastic museums and galleries.

Wilberforce House, the iconic home of William Wilberforce, explores the role the Hull MP, and the city, played in the abolition of slavery.

The Martime Museum is home to a full-sized whale skeleton, ship models and stunning artefacts from Hull's whaling, fishing and merchant trade.

The Hull and East Riding Museum has everything from majestic mammoths to Saxon invaders. Visitors can also walk through an Iron Age village, enter a Roman bath house and look at stunning mosaics.

On Saturday 15 December at Hull Central Library there is the Christmas Malarkey, where there will be Christmas stories and songs, as well as opportunities to make crafts and create Lego models.

The event is from 1pm until 3pm. Tickets cost £5 per child. Children under the age of one are admitted free.

Tickets can be bought online at www.hulllibraries.eventbrite.co.uk.
