Keep on top of your festive waste

Bin dates over the festive period are changing – and residents are being asked to keep their blue bins clean.
During Christmas and New Year, people usually produce 25 per cent more waste than at any other time of the year, and the Council is encouraging residents to take extra care with their recycling over the festive period.
Councillor Anita Harrison, Portfolio Holder for Streetscene, said: “Now is the time to make sure that you put the right rubbish in the right bin. This will ensure that all of your bins are emptied on time and they're not rejected.
“Recycling correctly is good for the environment, your city and your fellow residents too. By playing your part you’re helping us to save hundreds of thousands of pounds per year, money that can be used to boost your local economy and protect other council services that your community relies on.”
Earlier this year, new stickers were stuck on blue bins to help residents understand what materials cannot be recycled. The Bin Smart initiative urges residents not to fill their blue bins with the four most common prohibited items – dirty nappies, clothing, food and bagged waste.

Councillor Harrison continued: “We would also like to remind residents to check their bin collection dates on their calendars. These were contained within the recycling packs sent to every household in the city at the end of September.”
Here’s a quick reminder of the collection schedule for December and January:

Residents should put bins out by 7am at the boundary of their property and return it as soon as possible after it has been emptied. Bins will be emptied between 7am and 4.30pm. If a bin is missed, residents should contact the council within 48 hours of their collection day.
For any excess Christmas waste, you can visit one of the city’s three household waste and recycling centres located in Sutton Fields, Wiltshire Road and Burma Drive.

Each household is also eligible to receive one free bulky item collection per year for up to five large items, such as old furniture or large electrical goods etc.
