The Ugly Duckling opens at Hull Truck

After the success of this year’s Great Adventures in Storyland, the universe of childhood takes centre-stage once again in Hull Truck Theatre's festive production dedicated to under 7s and their families.

The Ugly Duckling: Christmas Special is a timely reimagining of Hans Christian Andersen’s classic tale that touches us all, young and old, with its equally poignant and playful take on childhood, beauty, and the importance of living in the moment.

Sometimes being young is hard and you just cant wait to grow up. Youll be happy, youll be beautiful, youll fly. Right?

In a bird world where all cygnets are told the story of The Ugly Duckling, Swan School teaches the young to grow up quickly… but what is missed along the way?

This is a story about being an Ugly Duckling not a swan.

Join us this December for a brand-new show that celebrates friendship, living in the present, and the magic of childhoodespecially at Christmas time!

The cast includes Sophie Clay (Coach Spring), Sophie Mercell (Spruce), and Phoebe Vigor (Sidney). The creative team that has turned this magic story into reality comprises Sam Caseley (Writer & Composer), Ruby Thompson (Director), Stewart Melton (Dramaturg), Natalie Pryce (Set & Costume Designer), Jess Addinall (Lighting Designer), Mat Clowes (Sound Designer).

Ruby Thompson, Director of The Ugly Duckling: Christmas Special, said: "We are delighted to re-work this classic tale for Hull’s younger audiences and their families. Our version of The Ugly Duckling will celebrate the importance of childhood and living in the present. And what better time of the year is there to be a child than at Christmas… with a present! This is going to be a Christmas party for all generations and I can’t wait to host it!”

Mark Babych, Artistic Director & Chief Executive at Hull Truck Theatre, said: “We are thrilled to be embarking on a new initiative with Hull Truck Theatre supported artists, The Herd, in a brand-new co-production of The Ugly Duckling: Christmas Special.”

The Ugly Duckling: Christmas Special will run at Hull Truck Theatre from Monday 17 December 2018 until Saturday 5 January 2019.

Tickets are £10 (£8 concessions).
