Hull city centre to be lit up for Christmas

12/11/2020

Over 45,600 Christmas lights are currently being installed across Hull city centre ready for the festive period.

Although there will be no large switch-on event this year due to covid restrictions on mass gatherings, Hull will still be ready to welcome Christmas shoppers with main streets and areas lit, as well as the traditional 45ft Norway Spruce as the centrepiece in Queen Victoria Square.

Taking around six weeks to complete, KWL teams are currently installing over 228 separate columns, plus decorating Jameson Street, King Edward St and Saville Street trees, and a Whitefriargate and Silver Street lighting scheme over the street.

Hull New Theatre Gardens, Queen Victoria Square and Hepworth Arcade will also have their own lighting schemes and for the first time, lampposts on the marina will be decorated.

Councillor Dave Craker, Portfolio Holder for Leisure and Culture said: “It is of course disappointing that we are unable to hold the annual switch-on event which attracts thousands each year, however Christmas is not cancelled and we are working hard to ensure the city centre still has the warm festive feel that shoppers are accustomed to.”

The lights will remain on until January. It is hoped the switch-on of the lights will be broadcast on the council’s social media channels.
