There’s a party at the palace and everyone’s invited. Only, someone’s been missed off the list and she’s not very happy about it! Our five magical Nannas spin the tale of Princess Briar Rose in this reawakening of a fairy-tale classic packed with music, song, dance and laughter. Has the King managed to destroy all the spinning wheels? Will the Prince be able to fight his way through the tangle of thorns? Or is the Princess set for a very long sleep? One thing’s for sure – the Nannas know best and they’re always in the mood for a party!
Hull Truck Theatre are delighted to present their enchanting and adventure packed Christmas production of Sleeping Beauty, running from Friday 4 December until Saturday 9 January 2016. From acclaimed children’s writer Mike Kenny and the team behind last year’s production of Cinderella, this is a visual feast for all the family.
Artistic Director Mark Babych has brought back many of the actor-musicians from last year’s hit show Cinderella. Annabel Betts, who played Cinderella, returns as Nanna Janine, Louise Shuttleworth plays Nanna Worrywart, Nicholas Goode plays Bad Nanna Sandra and Laurie Jamieson plays Nanna NooNoo. Harry Hamer (My Generation at West Yorkshire Playhouse, Sex and Docks and Rock & Roll by Red Ladder) joins the rest of the Nannas as Nanna Dorothy Pink.
Cinderella’s Musical Director James Frewer has composed an original score for Sleeping Beauty, which he will play on stage along with the cast. James has worked with several leading theatres including Hampstead Theatre and the Soho Theatre, as well as Hull Truck Theatre’s Associate Company Middle Child.

Mark Babych, Artistic Director, says: “Following the popularity of Cinderella last year, I’ve brought back the same talented team of actor-musicians, along with a few new faces, to take a fresh look at Sleeping Beauty. Our show is full of energy and fun for all the family, with a feisty Princess and a group of quirky Nannas as her guides. We’ve created an original score with a 60s-inspired feel that will have audiences toe tapping and singing along.”
Hull Truck Theatre are recruiting a yarn-y army
The theatre are looking for knitters and crocheters of all abilities to help with Sleeping Beauty. The theatre need a team of knitters to ‘yarn bomb’ 24 seats in the main auditorium in rainbow colours, help to transform the lower foyer into a glittering winter wonderland, and lend a hand with costume. Hull Truck Theatre are hosting informal knit and natter sessions throughout November for volunteers to share knitting ideas and get inspiration for their designs. Everyone is welcome, from beginners to expert knitters looking for a challenge. Tea and biscuits will be provided.
